Auto Parts: back-up sensor, lincoln town car, neutral safety switch

Question
I resently purchased a 2003 lincoln town car signature from a friend who passed away. The rear bumper has the two round sensors just like my 2004 lincoln does.
The 2003 will not peep when backing up, and the information console tells me that it has been enabled.
I put the car in reverse and press re-set and nothing happens, could it have been disconnected and if so where? I purchased a manuel on the car, and nothing in it that mentions back up sensors.
I have gone to the internet, and all I get is how to purchase a back-up system or new car.
can you help me.

Answer
I don't know about this, much.  The sensors in the bumper measure the distance to the nearest object behind the car and change the beeping as you reverse according to how close you are coming.  They only activate when the car is in reverse.  Do the reverse lights come on when the car is in reverse?  If they don't, then the problem is the switch in the transmission that also serves as a neutral-safety switch.  If the lights are coming on, then the system should work, except that the sensors are famous for failing.  If both sensors have failed, that would do it, too.  This isn't something that I'm super familiar with, so you might want to show the car to a dealer mechanic or a pro who is familiar with these cars.  GM uses a very similar system, if that helps.  If it was disturbing to the previous owner, he may have disabled it somehow, possibly by unplugging the sensors (plug is not too far from the sensor, behind the bumper).  If it uses a dedicated peeper (one that doesn't serve any other purpose), he may have unplugged that.  We use to unplug seat belt beepers all the time back in the seventies.
