Auto Parts: Nissan Pathfinder, heat shields, nissan pathfinder

My vehicle is really noisy, more so now than 2 years ago when I bought it used.  I was told the heat shield needed to be replaced to the tune of over $250. That sounded noiser than the sound the vehicle makes! I really am bothered by the noise though, any ideas?

When I get vehicles in with rattling heat-shields, I usually just remove them. What problems could removing it cause? Well, if you happen to be sitting in traffic in central Arizona during a heat wave with your vehicle running, it may cause your carpeting to steam a little bit.
