Second question: my gas tank door won't open. there is a leaver on the floor just outside of the drivers seat. When you raise the leaver, the gas tank door opens. Why would it not open?

ANSWER: Just the way I am and how it was posed.

On the gas tank, it's a mechanical device, not electric.
I have the same trouble with the wife's Tuscon SUV.
Could be a cable fatigue issue (a small threaded cable
runs from the latching lever to the door release.)
But basically, you'd need to bend the retaining plate
to "pop" the door away from the frame. Inspect it to see.

QUESTION: I think I know what you are talking about when you say 'retaining plate'. It is broken. Is this difficult to replace? It looks fairly simple.

Ah, well I think it's a welded piece.
You might need to reconstruct it.

You can check with Toyota to see if they can quick
repair, or maybe a local body shop can handle the fix.

Not certain you can bend it yourself correctly
to repair without inspecting it firsthand. :>(
