Car Alarms: anti-theft alarm goes on after connecting battery, search bar, valet

Hi,

We were out-of-town for a long period, so I disconnected the black cable of the battery (left the red on the battery) and left it. After we came back, I tried to connect the battery's black cable, the anti-theft alarm started going off immediately. Pl. advise the correct way to disable the alarm. I am afraid that if I don't do it correctly, the engine will be disabled after a certain attempts. Thanks.
