Car Alarms: 97 VW Beetle key fob, car alarm systems, replacement transmitters

I've lost my one and only key fob for my W reg VW Beetle, I've looked on e bay with the idea to buy a repacement key fob and get it re programmed. Is this ok or pron to problems ? Do you know what version of key fob i should be looking for and approximately how much it costs to get it reprogrammed ??
