Car Stereos: 94 suburban CDM removal, deck unit, power connections

Question
Hello Brian,
I have a 94 Suburban with a six speaker system. I replaced the cassette deck unit a few years back, but left the CDM unit in place. Now I want to  take the CDM unit out, but I've run into an issue. When I got the CDM out of the console, I found that the wiring harness is hard wired to the unit(no plug). How do I remove the CDM? The CDM is dead, so can I cut the harness, or will that screw up the system? Is there a plug on the other end of the harness that can be unplugged, and if so, where is the plug? I'd appreciate any help, Thanks!

Answer
Hi Joel,

Sorry about the long delay in answering this question.

The wiring from the control and display unit was originally routed to the factory tuner/amplifier; it's a silver box located behind the ashtry assembly.  The leads from the control box and the cassette player were plugged into the bottom of the tuner/amp, while the speaker and power connections, along with the antenna, were plugged into the top.  If you've replaced the cassette deck with an after-market head unit, and the original control box is dead, then it's likely you've already had the tuner/amp out--if only to get to the speaker and power harness at the top.  Once the control unit cable is unplugged from the bottom, however, you can just fish it up through the dash to remove the control box entirely.  However, if you find it easier to just cut the wires, you won't hurt anything.

Hope this helps!

Brian
