Car Stereos: L7, ohm load, voice coils

Question
QUESTION: Can i wire a 2ohm L7 to a 4ohm L7 . If so how

ANSWER: Hi Chris,

Sorry, but I don't understand your question.  Are you asking if you can wire a 2-ohm L7 and a 4-ohm L7 together to the same amplifier?  Or are you asking if you can wire a 2-ohm L7 so that it becomes a 4-ohm load?

Please send a follow-up with a bit more detail on what, exactly, you're trying to do, and I'll see if I can give you an answer.

Thanks

Brian

QUESTION: i have 1   2ohm dvc L7 and a 4ohm dvc L7. and for the time being i am running them to a cali profile ca1200  2 chan amp. how would u wire the subs 2 the amp.

Answer
Chris,

About the only way to do this would be to connect one subwoofer to each channel on the amp.  This still isn't an ideal setup, but it's really the only option you have.  Your 2-ohm L7 should be wired with the voice coils in series, which will make it a 4-ohm load for the amplifier.  Your 4-ohm L7 should be wired with the coils in parallel, making it a 2-ohm load.  I'll give you links to a wiring diagram for each wiring configuration.

Because the two subs are different impedance, that means that one sub will get more power than the other.  There's really nothing you can do about this; the amplifier only has a single gain control for both channels, so it's not possible to adjust the subs individually.  You should make sure each sub has its own enclosure; don't use them in a box where they're sharing the same airspace.  You can have them in the same box, as long as each sub has its own separate enclosure.

The ideal setup would be to either use a separate amplifier for each subwoofer, or replace one of the subs so that both your L7's are the same impedance.
