Car Stereos: Amplifier will not power back on, car fuse, power fuse

Question
Brian,

I recently installed 2-10" subs with a jl audio 1000/1 amp in my Infiniti M35. I disconnected factory Bose sub, used a line level converter to get rca's, wired remote, power & ground and it worked great. I was showing it to a friend and forgot to start the car. At first bass was on, then amp turned off. Even after disconnecting the power and remote for a possible "resetting" period, the amp still will not power up. When reading voltage between remote and ground 13.1. When reading voltage between power and ground, nothing. Fuses look good. You think it fried the amp since the remote is connected to car fuse box, or should I just change the glass amp power fuse anyway? Not sure what happened??

Please HELP

Greg

Answer
Hi Greg,

Even if the amp was defective, I'd still expect to see voltage on the power wire.  It sounds like you have a power line problem, and the fuse is the prime suspect.  You can verify this by using your meter to test the voltage on both sides of the fuse holder; if you see 12+ volts on the battery side, and no voltage on the output side, then you'll have isolated the problem.  AGU (glass tube) fuses are notorious for developing a break that kills the power, even though the fuse doesn't look blown.

Hope this helps!

Brian
