Car Stereos: speaker& connecting, ohm voice coils, watts rms

Question
QUESTION: hello,i have 2 kicker s15l5 solo-baric subs & a kicker zx1000 amp. what is the best way to connect them safly with the most power.   thank you.

ANSWER: Cleve, Your subs have 2 four ohm voice coils each, and you have 2 subs.  Your amp is only stable down to 2 ohms.  For best hook up, I would wire each sub in series.  That means short wire from negative of one voice coil to positive of the other on the same sub.  Then, wire the subs together parallel.  That would be a positive wire from the amp to each sub empty positive terminal, then a negative wire from each sub to negative of amp.  That gives your system 500 watts rms, and it will not blow the subs.  Hope this helps, Scott

QUESTION: hey thanks for your time scott, but i have one more question. i have two 2ohm subs will that be the same hook up.thanks

Answer
Well, if everything is the same except the ohms of the subs, the wiring may be too much.  That amp puts out 1000 watts at 2 ohms by 1 channel.  Your speakers are only rated 750 watts rms.  When your amp's rms watts are higher than your speaker's rms watts, you are at very high risk of blowing your speakers.  It is very hard to tell when they are going to blow at those volume levels.  If I had your setup with 2 ohm subs, I would just use one voice coil per sub, then wire the two subs together in parallel as mentioned above.  That would provide a 4 ohm system as the above system was, and your amp's 500 watt rms output would be plenty to power your subs without the worry of blowing them.  Good Luck, Scott
