Car Stereos: Kicker Setup, orion hcca d5000, dual voice coil

Question
I got 2 15 inch kicker L7 dual voice coil 4ohm subwoofers, 1000RMS, and I am trying to find an amp that will both push the subs and not hurt my pockets as much. I was looking at a couple for example, the ORION HCCA-D5000 because its 2500 at 1 ohm, the KICKER ZX2500.1. I was even thinking about a 2 amp setup like, 2 KICKER ZX1000.1, 2 MTX XTHUNDER 1000D, or 2 HIFONICS BRUTUS BXi1610D 1600W. Those are just a few at the top of my list but which should I choose and how would I get my subs down to 1 ohm? And if I did 2amps, I already have an eclipse 4 channel for my interiors. On top of an extra battery, what farad capacitor would I need?

Answer
Hi Rico,

I apologize for the extended time it's taken me to get to your question.

Personally, my preference in your situation would be for a pair of amplifiers rated around 1000 watts at 2 ohms.  I'm more confident in the long-term reliability of two amps running 2-ohm loads than a higher power amp with a 1-ohm load.  No matter how you split it, though, 2000 watts RMS is likely to be fairly expensive.

I wouldn't advise paying more for an amplifier (or amplifiers) rated higher than 2000 watts RMS total.  I don't think there's a practical benefit to exceeding the subwoofers' rated power (unless you're trying to win dB soundoff events) and you'd be that much more likely to damage your subs.

If you decide to go with a separate amp for each sub, I'd suggest adding Alpine's MRP-M1000 to your list of choices.  You might also look at Hifonic's BXi-2010D or last year's BXi-2008D as amplifiers capable of running both subs at a 1-ohm load.  You might find the BXi-2008D at a discount because it's an older model.

Either way, you'll be wiring the subwoofer voice coils in parallel.  Here's a diagram for a single sub with each amp:

If you decide to go with a 1-ohm stable amp for both subs, use this wiring scheme:

Hope this helps!
