Car Stereos: 2001.5 Passat Radio, replacement component, chipmonks

Question
Hi there Brian! My Passat radio suddenly lost it's power, now the speakers sound like chipmonks. To be more specific I can hear music but not like before, it sounds very thin. To me sounds like the amp if there´s one is gone or maybe the speakers are gone. But all of them at the same time? I don't think so. Anyway I don't want to purchase another stereo system, I'm happy with the OEM one. Can you help me with this? I'll really appreciate it.

Answer
Hi Julian,

That's not a problem I've run into before.

It's certainly possible that your Passat has a factory amplifier, if it's equipped with a Monsoon audio system.  If it's equipped, it should be mounted under the rear deck in the trunk.  Usually, if the amp fails, you'll lose all your sound; but it's certainly possible that an amplifier defect is the cause of your problem.  If your Passat isn't equipped with an amp, then the defect is likely to be in the head unit. (I agree that it's improbable for all your speakers to fail at once).

If you're set on keeping an OEM system, then your best bet is to look for a replacement head unit or amp on eBay, or a used parts dealer.  The cost of a new replacement component from a dealer would probably be quite high.

Hope this is helpful!

Brian
