Car Stereos: car stereo wont come back on, aftermarket stereo, stereo shop

Question
while driving last night my car stereo just shut off, i changed the fuses n checked the wires but still cant find the problem, can u help me plzzzz???

Answer
Hi Melissa.

If it has shut off, and not even a backlight or clock will come back, there's one of 3 things that've likely happened.

1) Fuses.  You may have checked them, but there might be more, and you may have checked the wrong ones.  Check under the hood for a fuse compartment, as well as by your legs in the driver seat.  Make sure they're all good.  This is the issue a large percentage of the time.

2) Wires.  Make sure nothing's come loose, or disconnected.  If you feel up to it, pull the stereo out of the car, and check its connections at the back.  If it's an aftermarket deck, make sure the wire connections made with the factory wires are all clean, and still connected.  Also, if it's aftermarket, make sure none of its fuses have popped -- many aftermarket decks have their own fuses in the back of them near the wire harness (sometimes even behind it.)

3) The deck has simply blown up.  This is the least likely, but nevertheless possible.  If everything else checks out, this might be your issue.  If that's the case, take it into a car stereo shop.  They should be able to test it, and charge a nominal fee if they can fix it, or might do the work for free if you agree to buy your new stereo there when you replace it.  Do your homework, and buy a good aftermarket stereo which you'll inevitably find sounds and looks way better than factory anyway.

Good luck,

Justin
