Car Stereos: Infinity factory amp compatibility, maximum input voltage, wattage output

Question
QUESTION: I am replacing my Infinity OEM CD receiver in my 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse with an aftermarket unit (undecided)...and want to retain the factory Infinity AMP & SPEAKERS....WHAT IS THE RECOMMENDED PRE-AMP-OUT VOLTAGE TO BE USED....what is the maximum input voltage allowed on the factory Infinity pre-amp..do you have the specs?????...or do you know the pre-amp voltage-out on the original factory CD unit???  Thanks!

ANSWER: Hi Bob,

Generally, any aftermarket deck's standard pre-outs should be OK on your new stereo.  The voltage input specification on most aftermarket amps is something like 100mV -> 6V.  The voltage is more about the ability for the cable to carry a signal a good distance without deterioration.

Just make sure you get the proper wire harness for your new aftermarket deck since it will come with the extra RCA -> DIN harness you'll need to keep your factory amp & speaker system intact.

QUESTION: Justin......another thing.....what about wattage RMS....what would be your recommended wattage output of the new head unit to sync with the factory amp...not too high or too low.....also would you know if the MITAH adaptor would take care of the power antenna function????  Thanks!

Answer
I wouldn't worry too much about wattage since the factory amps are generally only around 300 watts or so.  Anything in that area or higher should be fine.  Remember, if you get one that has MORE power, you can always just use the volume knob. :)

As for the MITAH, make sure you get BOTH pieces, the one with the RCA ends, and the one with the power, ground, etc.  As long as you get both of those, then yes, it should certainly have the power amplification plug on it.  If your aftermarket deck doesn't have a power amp wire, just splice it into the 'remote' wire along with the amp remote wire.
