Car Stereos: car audio problem, mono amp, rca jacks

Question
QUESTION: hi ed thanks for the quick response and helpful ideas. i tried what you suggested and unfortunately for me the problem is still there,now i rewired all the speakers through the crossovers directly to my 4channel(mtx thunder ta 404-35 watts by 4) i also have subs running as well(2 12"polk audio db's)powered by an eclipse(xa1000)mono amp but that shouldn't have any thing to do with the problem at hand right? my head unit is an eclipse cd4000 w/2 sets of outputs all connected correctly to the amp i replaced the head unit to see if that was the problem- it wasn't. did the same thing with the amp. Is it possible there is something wrong with the speakers? my truck is a 99 4runner and was preamped from the factory system and i disconnected that setup completely do you think something could be hidden, it seems unlikely but im running out of ideas. i mean the sound just drops from the front after a minute or two. volume control on my head unit goes from 0-80 it happens when the volume is between 50-70 at this point i dont know what else to do.i cant thank you enough with helping me with all this i really appreciate it Thanks

ANSWER: ok man what did it do when you switched  the RCA jacks from the front to the back and what happened when you flipped the output wires on the amp?.

dont lose hope we are getting there :).

Cheers!.

QUESTION: hey ed,when i switched out the rca's the same problem was still there,however i just overlooked the specs for the speakers and it says that there is a electronic tweeter protection circuit i guess built in but i dont see why that should be a problem meaning with the external crossovers and all. the speakers are defenitely not being overpowered so i dont understand why that would be in effect

ANSWER: ok let me ask you this. the problem was still there whenever you changed the speaker outputs on the amp on the same front speakers or did the problem was now present on the back speakers?.

If so we have eliminated the possibility of the amp causing this and the bad signal. so that just points out to the speakers there has to be a problem with them. you think they might be bad?. to check this check the impedance with an volt metter put it on the 200 Ohms setting and touch the black lead to the negative terminal on the speaker and the red to the positive if it reads less or more then 4.00 then the speaker its bad also check the tweeter.

by the way, when the sound drops does the amp enter protecion mode? ussually represented by a red light somewhere in the amp.

let me know.

QUESTION: hello ed i finally figured it out.The polk crossovers are the problem, i went and bought a kicker component set and the problem is gone. I kept the polk midrange woofer and the tweeter installed and just replaced the crossovers w/the new kicker crossovers they seem to be built better than the polk's and the kicker tweeter is a little harsh so  i kept the polk tweeters and worked out perfect sounds great.    thanks again ed for the quick responses and all your help..

Answer
man im glad we could figure it out i was starting to get frustrated... i even asked the other guys that work with me and they all agreed that the problem was right there some where between the amp and the speakers :). BUT if i remember well you said you had connected the speakers directly to the amp bypassing the crossovers and YOU said that the problem was still there ;( thats what was trowing me off.. anyway.

COOL BEANS!. ha ha good luck man.
