Car Stereos: Car CD changer, car cd changer, fm modulator

Question
QUESTION: Should I be able to replace a 6 CD changer with a 12-CD changer? (shoulda checked first, I know, I know)I actually did and the stereo in the car does not "see" that a CD changer is installed. When I re-connect the old, non-working 6 CD changer, the stereo "sees" it. The changers are both Alpine, Ai-Net style.

ANSWER: Hi Mark.

Why don't you get a Fm modulator for your new Cd changer?.

that way you can have your cd changer play tru your Fm stations.

But to answer your question, Yes you should be able to replace a 6 cd changer with a 12-cd changer. :)

i don't see why the radio wont "see" the new cd changer maybe if you gimme a step by step list of what you did maybe we can troubleshoot this together

Cheers.

QUESTION: Thanks. All I did was unplug the old 6-CD changer and plug in the 12-cd changer. Both are Alpine, both are used, old from year 2000, 12 from 1999. It cycles thru the trays but won't play the CD, neither new cds nor burned. One time when I plugged the new one in, the radio displated "Not Control" which is not a message on the table in the manual. My neighbor thinks the original CD player may be restricted to just this model car (Jag), so the new one doesn't get recognized, and thus "not controlled". That seems to make sense since the old CD player, while it does say Alpine all over it, there is no Alpine Model number, just a Jaguar Part number(the 12 is Alpine Model CHA-1214).
Never thought about the FM modulator and don't know anything about them. Might that be a work-around. Thanks again. Mark

Answer
you should have mentioned that it is a factory radio :).

Yeah thats kinda whats happening, its kinda the same thing as to try to plug in a factory stereo from a 1989 bettle to a 2007 mercedes and expect it to fit the factory harnesses, even though they are just one year appart they might be completely different.

as far as the modulator its real basic, really the modulator transmits the signal from the changer tru an fm station lets say u set up the modulator to play on 89.9, on the factory radio set your tuner to 89.9 and your radio is receiving the signal tru that station. the only problem that your gonna have is to get a modulator thats compatible with your changer. im gonna do some research on my own for ya, see if you can get one for a factory unit.
