Car Stereos: head unit custom install, dash area, crutchfield

Question
I have a 2000 tahoe, and I want to install my panasonic in dash head unit where the cd pocket and stock tape deck are in the center of the dash area in front of the center console. It won't fit up top and I don't want it shifted toward the drivers view like that. I have seen headunits in this spot in other Chevy's. Is there an aftermarket dash/console piece to buy? or if I have to custom cut, what do I do?  Thanks again, Nic

Answer
Do you have the component system where the "control" for the sound system is located above the heater controls and the cassette is located in the center dash with air vents integrated to the panel?
2000 is a crossover year where some editions had the old GM set up like I described above and some had the NEW set up with the CDplayer/Radio located on the main dash panel to the right of the gauges.
Either way, there are aftermarket kits available from crutchfield or any car stereo outlet. If you have the old style system, you can actually buy color matched dash kits for your vehicle, the dash pieces are built to address the depth issue or you can get custom if you don't like them sticking so far out of your dash (You have to modify the heater box located directly behond the cassette deck if you want a "flush" fit.)
