Car Stereos: sub boxes, medium density fibreboard, marine grade plywood

Question
QUESTION: my brother and i have 2 12's we r putting in the back of his camaro and thought it would be less to make our own box. but i have no idea what materials i must use. i need to know the type of wood used when building something like that.

ANSWER: There are two types of wood I use to build a standard sub box:  MDF (aka Medium density fibreboard) or I use marine grade plywood. For budget's sake, I recommend the MDF. I would not recommend using anything less that 3/4" thick. In many cases I prefer to use 1" thick on the baffle board (the flat board the subs actually bolt onto)
You neglected to mention what year your Camaro is and what type of subs you are planning to use. If you have a Gen 3 or newer Camaro, you can get some serious bottom end reflecting off those lovely big back windows if you built the enclosure down into that deep well, but the enclosure is quite complex as there are quite a few small pieces and angles to deal with in there. I HIGHLY recommend you purchase a prefabricated box specially built for the Gen 3 Camaro's but make sure it matches the enclosure size demands of your subs before you plunk down your cash.
Good luck and have fun..those were one of my favorite vehicles to make silly amounts of boom with a limited budget.

QUESTION: yea it is a 1995 z28 camaro. we have the 2 subs in. and we bought a standard box but did not fit so i was planning on making one to fit exactly. and it hits very hard. thanks alot. and also could i use that same material to build a center console for my pontiac fiero?

Answer
Yes you can use mdf for the center console. If you're not placing speakers in it, you can use a reduced thickness to save some weight (mdf is very heavy). The center consoles I build usually have MDF framing but I use fibreglass to contour the curves etc. It's just as strong without the weight and bulk of mdf.
