Auto Racing: CAM, holley 750, malibu wagon

Question
JOHN,
I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME.  I HAVE ALL MY PARTS, BUT I'M NOT SURE IF IT IS THE RIGHT COMBO.  I'M BUILDING A 69 ELCAMINO.  I HAVE A 10 BOLT (FROM A MONTE) 3:73 POSI.  350 .30 OVER KEITH BLACK FLAT TOP, 64CC IRON HEADS 2.02 VALVES, 1.5 ROLLER TIP MAGNUM ROCKERS, STOCK CRANK, ELGIN 290/290 CAM (218/218 @ .050), TH350 STOCK.  MY QUESTION IS IN THE CAM.  I DON'T KNOW IF THE CAM IS A GOOD CHOICE OR NOT.  I WAS GOING TO GO WITH 2600-3000 STALL CONVERTER.  I HAVE A TORKER INTAKE W/ HOLLEY 750 DP.  WILL THIS WORK OR SHOULD I USE THE PERFORMER RPM INTAKE.  I'D LIKE A LOPEY SOUND.  I'M GING WITH THE ORIGINAL FLOWMASTER 40 SERIES 2 1/2 " PIPES W/ HEADERS.  I GUESS MY QUESTION IS IN THE CAM AND INTAKE.  I WANT GOOD POWER FROM THE CAR.  NOT RUNNING A/C. COULD YOU GUESS ON THE APPROX HORSEPOWER, BECAUSE I HAVEN'T A CLUE.  TRYING TO GET 325+.  LOOKING FOR A GOOD COMBO.  WOULD LIKE TO KEEP THE CAM IN IF IT WILL WORK, BUT WILL REPLACE IF YOU THINK IT WOULD BE BEST.    THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.    SCOTT VINSON

Answer
Hi Scott.I'm assuming were talking 350 cubic inch or larger .so far you have a decent sounding package going together ,there are a few changes i'd make though,go with the RPM performer,I still think it's one of the best all around intakes, our current bracket car,'82 malibu wagon has a GM 385 hp"fast burn" crate engine ,i disassembled it and moved some clearances around then added the GM 430 hp. hydraulic  roller kit ,vortec rpm performer, msd billet dist. with the fastest curve i could easily  install,34 deg.total @1700 rpm.rear gears are 4:33(i took out 4:56s) behind a 1:76 powerglide trans i'd built .a tight 10" converter keeps it out of the 11's ,along with the Holley 600cfm  dp.(with an old 396/780 carb, and a tight 8" converter there are 11.70 timeslips and weatherwise ,it was 2 tenths off , 11:50s with no rollbar! anyone ?Thank heavens they like us at Atco!Pictures are in the atco photog's gallery. but enough about me . I'd like to know the lobecenter  on the cam you have ,i'd say it'll  have  a relatively smooth idle .i'm  a competition cams dealer  so my choice would be the 286 cam @.490L/236Dur. you have enough compression and the converter should be ok ,i'm not that wild about holley dp carbs on the street ,That 780 i mentioned is one of my faves (even the '69 z/28 302 had one)the older straight booster 3310-1 carbs  would work just fine .i hope my motor mouth monologue helped some .JM
