NASCAR Racing: starting position, bud pole, daytona 500

Question
how is the starting positions for the upcoming Daytona 500
determined? i understand they have to have a qualifying speed, but if you go to yahoo nascar many drivers positions
are higher than others with lower qualifying speeds.
and also some of the drivers that failed to qualify had
higher speeds than some who qualified.
     thanks,

Answer
Sorry, I'm on vacation and AllExperts didn't list it. Hope you'll excuse the delay as I'm answering this while still on vacation.

Here's the short and sweet of Daytona's qualifying system this year:

Pos 1 and 2: Pole sitter and outside pole sitter from Bud Pole qualifying
[no need to be top 35 in prevoius season car Owners Points]

Pos 3 thru 39: top 35 in prevoius season car owners points and two highest finishing teams in each Gatorade Duel races race NOT in the top 35 set by their finishing postion in the Gatorade Duel races.

Pos 40-42: fastest qualifiers not in by above

Pos 43: past champion provisional, otherwise the spot goes to the next fastest qualifier.
