BMW Repair: Catalytic Converter replacement, e30 bmw, muffler shop

Question
Hello, I just recently fell in love with my 1985 325e! Good price and everything! but then when i took it to get smogged i was told i need to replace the catalytic converter. Auto shops all gave me 300-500 dollar estimates for the part. I found one online that says its for the e30 bmw brand new for 60 bucks? do you think its any good or real? here is the link. http://www2.bimmerpartswholesale.com/parts/parts1/bimmerparts/quote.jsp?year=198...
It says its not a direct fit and would that be a problem or no? please let me know. Thank you very very much!!!!

Answer
Cody,
There is a good reason for the price difference.  When you buy the expensive ones, you are paying for the WHOLE exhaust from the engine to the back of the Cat.  There is a lot of pipe and bends, and that costs money.  The $60 will work, but it's a "cut and weld" replacement.  So you will have to cut a piece out of your exhaust (preferably the old CAT), put this cat in and weld it solid.  So if you know of someone who can weld thin exhaust pipe, you can save a ton!  If you buy the CAT and take it to a muffler shop, they should be able to do it for less than $100 labor (probably $50).

 Good luck,
 Josh
