BMW Repair: BMW 528i tailgate latch, bmw 528i, release button

Question
The tailgate latch on my 528i (1998) stopped working, i opened the trunk, and then when shut it just doesn't latch.  The trunk can be shut all the way down, and stays down, but it is not latched at all and can be opened freely.  Do you have any thoughts?

Danielle, If there is no audible click when pressing the release button or it can't be moved manually and unlocked with the key then I recommend replacing it. Do you have a wagon? or sedan? You mentioned tailgate earlier. This is not a big job and you probably could do it. Let know if you want repair instructions.
