BMW Repair: Rear Window, torx screws, 10mm nuts

Question
Hello
My daughter was letting the rear window down and I heard something drop. The arm to raise the window is no longer attached to the window. Wanted to know how to open panel and repair?
My model is a BMW 328i , 4Dr, 1999 (Diver side Rear)
Thank You

Answer
Michael. The window regulator has broken. Don't be hard on your daughter because they fail all the time. The regulator is a metal cable that runs over plastic pulleys not the scissor arm type you are thinking of. Carefully pry off the wood trim an release two T-20 torx screws. Also release two T-20 screws along bottom of arm rest. One more T-20 screw under plastic piece at top of grab handle were the rear view mirror switch would mount. Pry door panel off starting at the bottom. Release white plastic cable on back of door handle opener. Release window switch connector by pulling straight out. Release footwell light at bottom of panel and any speaker connection if any. Set aside panel. Replace any plastic panel clips if broken. Use razor blade to cut black sticky ribbon sealer away from the foam vapor barrier. DONT Damage vapor barrier. Replace if torn or water leaks in footwell will result during rainy season. Ribbon sealer is a 3M ribbon sealer if you need any or have to replace the vapor barrier. I would let the car door face the sun to warm up the sealer as removal of vapor barrier is twice as easy. Leave the bottom section of vapor barrier attached and fold down out of the way. Remove window motor screws   T-30 (3) and connector. Slide window down until 8mm screw is visible through hole in regulator. If window won't move cut regulator cable. There is a nut that will fall out the back of the window glass clip as you remove the 8mm bolt. Seperate window from regulator and push window to top of guide (closed window), and run masking tape on the window-over the top of the door and back on to the inner window to hold in place. Remove (3) 10mm nuts and fish out regulator.

Reinstall all. use a little ribbon sealer in your socket to hold your 8mm bolt when installing. Test run the window before putting the panel back on. I charge two hours labor plus parts at the dealer if you are not up to the job. These instructions are for E46 model 3 series U.S. sedan.
