BMW Repair: bmw firing circuit side airbag front right, obdii scanner, system capability

Question
I am using the peake upgrade tool with the 16 pin connector that connects under the drivers dash obII connector. This is the tool that is giving me the fault code firing circuit side airbag front right side. I replaced the complete door harness which the airbag connector is part of. I have check the plug connection several times and it is connected correctly. I check the other end of the connection and no pins damaged. I also replace the airbag thinking that was the problem. I remove my center console can't find any module under there. It is empty any ideas where else it might be. Do you think the module could be bad. I will disconnect the battery for a good 30 minutes to see if that will allow me to reset the code with my tool. There are two pins that feed the airbag. What should the voltage be. How do I check that?

Hi,
I own a BMW 2002 330i. My side airbag light came on after changing the front passenger window regulator. I damaged the connector to the airbag. Airbag light came on code fault was, (power supply). I replaced the right door harness and now I have the fault code, (firing circuit side airbag front right). I also replaced the airbag. I am unable to reset the code. I am using peake airbag reset too.

Rich, you need to reset the light with an OBDII scanner with airbag system capability or the dealers factory diagnosis machine. The tool you are trying to use only works on older cars I believe. You should only be charged an hours labor to clear the light. (If you are clever you can catch a dealer tech before lunch and slip him some cash to do it, but you didn't hear that from me)

Rich, did you replace the twisted pair airbag wiring that you damaged? You can get the airbag wiring seperate. What is the code now? Same code or different? If you don't turn on the key with the airbag disconnected you won't incure the airbag light for future reference. If the light won't go away then the fault must be currently present and you need to check with a scanner if the fault is present or just stored in history. Check for power on the airbag connector. I believe that power and ground are provided by the MRS control unit under the center console. Power is provided with the key on and ground is monitored and provided when triggering the bag. Recheck the connector on the door and make sure it is installed correctly and none of the pins didn't push back in the connector when installed. I looked into the tool you are using. The 5R-SRS is for 1994-2000 model year unless you have the AB03 adaptor (16 pin) then it should be compatible . Make sure you have the right equipment. Recheck that harness and connection. You can try removing the negative battery cable for 16 minutes and reinstalling the cable to reset the control modules and then retest the MRS system.

Answer
Richard I don't know what to tell you when you say that you can't find the MRS control module. It is under the center console on all U.S. models. Longitudinal and Lateral acceleration sensor are in it an has to be centrally located in the car. Check the voltage on the airbag connector with a Good voltmeter. Dont check the airbag pins on the bag! I don't know off hand what the voltage specs should be but make sure that they are identical to the drivers side bag by checking it's signal. It is possible the control unit is bad but unlikely after only disturbing passenger side bag. I have a feeling that there is something simple we are overlooking. Also make sure battery voltage and condition are good.
