BMW Repair: still problems w/ my 1984 318i...., radiator fans, ecu computer

Question
Yesterday you gave me some suggestions re: my BMW 318i...engine not running after it starts...we checked spark plugs, timing, fuel pressure is @ 40 lbs...that all seems to be ok..do you think it could be either the catalyctic converter clogged or since the car was sitting for awhile, maybe the gas in the bottom of the fuel tank could've gone bad? The car still starts and runs for 5 mins., then dies & won't start again for 5mins. then dies again over & over...help...

Answer
Kymberly,
Sorry to hear that you are still having troubles.

I doubt bad gas would be the problem, because that would not allow the engine to run smooth ANY time, not just after 5 minutes.

Ok, there are some sensors located near/on the thermostat housing.  One sensor is for the temp gauge in the instrument cluster, one is for the electric radiator fans, and one is called a "thermo-time" switch.  This basically tells the cars computer that the engine is warm, and to exit cold-start mode.  This sensor may be faulty and telling the ECU (computer) that the car is overheating or something.  Then when you allow that sensor to cool back down it will let you start the car.  You start the car back, and the sensor gets to what it thinks is too hot, and it causes the car to run awkward.

 Good luck,
 Josh
