BMW Repair: 2002 BMW 525i air conditioner failure, 2002 bmw 525i, gauge wires

Question
I see from prior postings there is a common problem with the final stage resistor on some BMWs.  My a/c just quit today.  There is minimal air coming out of the vents (almost so little you can't feel it at all), but the fan will not generate air flow at all.  Is my final stage resistor the problem?  If so, how do I fix it myself?  And finally, can I buy the part anywhere other than at a dealership?

Answer
Wolfgang, yes your final stage resistor it faulty. Please replace it. The E39 and E53 final stage units are a snap to replace. It is located on the side of the heater box. Warranty only pays me 18 minutes to replace it on your car, 6 minutes if the car came in for a different problem (those bastards!!). Remove the carpeted panel on the right side of the center console (Screw in the footwell and slide forward to free clips.) Dissconnect Charging socket if equipped. Next remove panel under glove box and unplug the light or unclip it from the panel and use it to see the final stage connector (Five heavy gauge wires black connector). Located close to the fire wall on the side of the heater/evaporator box. Push back retaining tab to the side and use the still connected wires and connector to wiggle out of the box. Notice the old cast iron heat sinks on the old part and the aluminum ones on the new one. Reinstall all. You can get the Final Stage at internet auto parts places like Partsbin.com and the like but you have to pay shipping so it may or may not be less than the dealer. Let me know how much it is with shipping? Happy motoring.
