BMW Repair: 1984 BMW 318i, fuel pump relay, bmw 318i

Question
I just bought this car at a great price because it would not start. I put a battery in first (it was missing) The car lit up and every thing works.
The car turns over strong but doesn't start.
I pulled the plugs out and they are bone dry.
Not getting fuel? Could it be the fuel pump, the fuel pump relay, or maybe the fuel filter?
Any help is highly appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
Bernard,
Sounds like you got a good deal, and the symptoms dont sound too bad.

Like you mentioned, I would check for fuel.  You need to have a plan when you start.  So work from the engine to the pump, and find out where the problem is.  First, I would disconnect the fuel line (Pressure side) and insert it into a plastic bottle drink bottle.  Have someone turn the key, and watch for fuel to come out of the hose.  There should be two fuel hoses; one from the pump, and one as a return going back to the gas tank.  Make sure you are checking the pressure side.  Also any time you are working with fuel and electronics (alternator) make sure to have a fire extinguisher close by.  I've never had any issues... but there is always the chance.

If you get fuel from the pump, then you injectors aren't firing, and you'll have to sort that issue out.

If you are NOT getting fuel, then try the pump and see if it's working (You might have two pumps on that car; one in the tank, and one in front of the driver's rear tire).  If the pump is working, then you have a clog or a pinched hose that needs replacing.

 Good luck,
 Josh
