Answer
hi there,
Firstly check all electrical connections. You say the car has been stood for a while, it's possible that a corroded contact could be the culprit.
I assume you have checked all the fuses and relays but check the no;15 fuse to see if it's blown, a faulty oil level switch can cause the fuse to blow. If this happens a loss of input to EWS from the Transmission Range Switch can occur. Disconnect the oil level switch and try to start the car. If it starts, there's your problem. There is a way on E39 BM's to check for a fault code on the dashboard digital display by switching the ignition on and holding down the trip reset button for about ten seconds, but it's so complex (not as easy as the earlier models) that you would have to be a specialist to make heads or tails of it anyway!

You might want to get it to a dealer to get the thing diagnosed properly before you throw loads of money at it in an effort to find the problem. You say you have fuel, so it's unlikely to be the inertia switch. I struggled for two days only to discover the ECU was burnt on the PC board where it affected the Ignition Amplifier.

Sorry, but most of my experience is with BM's of the slightly older variety, so I can only offer you advise based on where I would look for the problem.

Hope this helps
