BMW Repair: Removal of door panel on 1999 523i, razor blade, controller switch

Question
Hi.  I have an annoying rattle coming from inside the drivers door of my 523i but I can't seem to get the door panel off.  I've removed the screw behind the door handle and popped all the poppers.  This releases the lower half of the door but I can't find what's holding on the top part.  I'm also concerned about mucking up the airbag in the door by removing the panel incorrectly. Don't want to set it off or have to reset it.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Many thanks,

DG

Answer
David, Make sure the key is off and out of the ignition before pulling the air bag connector! BMW recommends disconnecting the battery (I just covered myself). Did you get the screw in the round door vent duct? Remove inner door handle from cable. Carefully pry out the Door controller switch and disconnect connectors (part is very expensive). Pop out all the clips around the door panel edges. Grab the handle of panel and pull up and a little bit away from the door. It takes a good amount of force. You have released the center square black plastic clip for the door panel. Work off the door and return to the door panel before installation. Remove carefully airbag and always store with the bag pointed up. Also Don't tear the foam vapor barrier that keeps water that has entered the door from spilling into the interior carpet. Carefully remove barrier with razor blade. Plug in airbag if you need to turn the key on for any reason to avoid airbag dash light warning.
