BMW Repair: Heater / AC fan, proper fuse, fuse holder

Question
I have a 2000 540i.  The fan has stopped working and I suspect a fuse.  However, I can't find the proper fuse to inspect, which I believe is #76 according to the chart that is part of the fuse holder.  My fuse holder (in the glove box) only has positions from 1 to 45.

Answer
Greg the higher number fuses are in the trunk by the battery. If that fuse is good and the A/C control unit turns on/off then I want you to replace the blower final stage resistor. Take off the plastic cover that is just behind the glove box in the passenger foot well. Up and too the left toward the center heater box by the firewall you will see five or six big gauge wires. These wires go into the Final Stage resistor. It may be held in by screws or just a plastic clamp on the firewall that you need to push back. Remove the resistor. If the resistor has large Cast iron heat sinks (fingers) then I am sure this is your problem. If it has smaller aluminum fingers then your problem is elsewhere. The new resistor runs about $175.00 retail last time I checked and the newest BMW Part number I came up with is 64 11 6 923 204. They may have a newer part number. Good luck Greg. Let me know how it turns out. This original cast iron component has a 100% failure rate. So if it isn't the current problem, you dodged a bullet down the road.
