BMW Repair: air conditioning, r 134a, leak stopper

Question
hi there, any help is appreciated.  I have a 2001 x5 suv and i'm pretty savy with mechanical repair.  My air conditioning only blows cold out of the far drivers vent to the left of the steering wheel.  The other vents do not blow cold at all, just luke warm.  It's like  adoor or something is opening all the way.  Ever seen this before?  I know the older bmws had problems with a/c control heads, any ideas?thanks

Answer
Jason, this may sound silly but your system is low on Refridgerant. This is a known symptom. Evacuate and measure the amount removed then Recharge the system. Put some A/C gauges on the car with the A/C running and check the pressures. The X5's system capacity is very small so it is very sensitive to over or under charge. The proper amount of R-134A is 1.00Lbs. You probably have a leak somewhere in the system. Do not use leak stopper sealant type recharge kits. Use some A/C oil with a dye in it when the system is evacuated. Place the system under a vacuum for 1/2 hour then turn the vacuum off and see if the system holds vacuum. Then Recharge. Sounds weird I know but I see it a lot. Let me know what you find.
