BMW Repair: 1986 325e Wierd Dashboard Lights, dashboard lights, service interval

Question
This is definitely not a modern BMW!  It's a great car, and I  got a great price, but I bought it knowing the glove box wouldn't open, and the owner's manual is in it.

Anyway, there are these lights on the dash located under the speedometer.  Several green, then yellow, then red.  They're little tiny lights, indicators of some kind.  I'm wondering if you can tell me what they're for.

Answer
Hi there,

These are the Service Interval Indicator lights. They are activated by a combination of mileage and time. So when you turn the key to the on position (without starting the car) you should see a whole row of green lights which (during the above mentioned period of time/mileage) will gradually lessen until you get orange then red. When they turn red your car is then overdue for a service. Two functions are covered by the lights.. namely Oil Service and Inspection.
If you see the Clock symbol at the same time as the Inspection light then the car is due its annual service.

If you do your own servicing then you can purchase a reset tool from various makers for about £20.00.

Hope this helps!
