BMW Repair: BRAKE light on, bmw dealership, brake shoes

Question
I have a 1997 528i.  On the instrument panel I have the "BRAKE" light in red on all the time when I drive just the past couple of days.  The book says to check the brake fluid level but I can't figure how to get the micro filter off first?  Could there also be other problems?  Please help so I can try doing something myself first as the BMW dealership is 100 miles away.
Thanks

Answer
If you look at your break resivour, there are lines in it where you should be able to see the amount in it.  if you open the cap and don't see no brake fluid at the top of it then you need to add.  Check your brakes and make sure they are not worn down.  Also check and make sure you are not driving with your emergency brake on.  It might be time to change your emergency brake shoes or have them adjusted.
