BMW Repair: transmission, automatic transmissions, transmission problem

I have a 1985 318i. There were no problems of trans slipping, the car would lift up while idling at a stop light like it had hydrolics. While turning onto a road using little bit of gas, the car stopped getting gas, so I pulled over.The car would not go in reverse or drive after that.Is this the transmission or possible something else?

 Unfortunately I dont mess with automatic transmissions, especially behind the 4 cylinder.  

 It is possibly a transmission problem, but it could be an engine problem as well.

 I would advise you to take it to a shop that can spend time with it.  There's just too many variables, and with me not being able to physically look at the car... it's going to take forever.
