Hi . I own a 1992 325i inline six. I live in the new york. I park the car in a garage and recently I went to drive my wife to work and the car didn't start. The engine would crank but would not fire. I kept my foot on the gas pedal and the car started. Now about 4 days later I start the car everything worked fine but there were heavy rains when I come back home I parked the car outside on the street I come back later during the day to start it and it will not start at all. Again the engine cranks but will not turn over. What can be the cause of this? I am an auto tech but I have very limited experience as I just graduated about 6 months ago. Could it be that the ECU got wet? I have heard this has happened before. Please help car is in the street in new york city need it asap. Thanks..any help would be greatly appreciated. Also I have checked the fuses. All seems to be OK.

Many questions come to mind.First off was there the basics,Spark and fuel pressure?I know it is a strange question to ask but it needed to know fully.Stepping on the accelerator was "old school" as it is fuel injected.Unless it dumping fuel but There is no cold start valve in an "i" engine.
Spark is the next step but an easy one to see if it does or doesn't have. From the coil to the cap and then from the cap to the plugs.
It is important to know which you do and don't have as the direction you go from there depeneds on where you go

Ok I know that it has coil over plug ignition so what can I do to check for spark in this case. Also I do here the fuel pump engage when the ignition switch is turned to the on position.

Answer
you can remove one coil assembly and check it...if there is spark at one chances are they all have it.If not look at the reference sensor, checking the resistance of the sensor to see if it does have about 950 Ohms. The intermitent maybe that or also check the connector under the intake as they sometimes corrode up the terminals
