BMW Repair: changed oil pan gasket with surprises, pan gasket, realoem

Question
Hi,

I changed the oil pan gasket on my 1990 525i m20 engine and have a couple of questions:

1) i had to remove the oil pump. when i got the pump out of the oil pan i found a tube sitting in the bottom of the pan, threaded on the outside  about an inch long.  I looked everywhere but can't see any place it would go on the pump or crankcase.

2) and I'm really new at this. After I closed everything up and put in the oil, i started the car. So the oil light came on, i expected that, but stayed on. I turned the car off immediately. How long should it take for the engine to build up the correct pressure?  I figured since probably all the oil was drained out of the car, it would take some time, not sure how long i should run the car with the light on.

3) is there any way to test that the oil pump is really working?

Thanks for your help

Answer
Jim,
It should only take a few seconds for the engine to build pressure.  This may seem like a dumb question, but did you put motor oil back in the engine?  I wouldn't ask if I had not seen it happen to someone else.

Here is a break-down of the oil pump so you can make sure everything went back together correctly:

Also look on this schematic, look at #20.  Is that the tube you are talking about?

The oil pump has a metal-to-metal seal, with no gaskets, so all the bolts need to be tightened correctly (dont strip them though).

 Hope this helps.
