Mr. Istudor,

I am inquiring about the removal of a shifter knob on a 2000 BMW 328i (e46 I believe).  The shifter lights on the PRDN321 panel are misaligned and I have the knowledge of how to fix that problem.  I just can't seem to remove the shifter knob.  Can you please give me advice on removal?  I tried simply pulling up on the knob, but that ins't working.  Any advice is most appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Yes your car is E46...is it a 5speed or automatic shifter... if it is five speed you need to locate the screw which is underneath the R12345 sticker. If its automatic its a bit different.

Hope this helps

Yes sir, it is an automatic.  I was told to just pull up as hard as I can, but it doesn't feel like the right thing to do.  Do you have recommendations for removing the knob from an automatic?

Answer
hmm ive never had to remove an automatic shifter before... if u are replacing it with another one look at the new one (currently not installed) and see if u can figure out how it might fasten to the shifter... then use that knowledge to remove the old one... if you are not replacing it with a new one I would inspect it very carefully for any sort of screw or clip holding it in place. Worse case, call bmw, they might tell u for free...
