BMW Repair: 318i quit running and wont start, coil ignition, gas tank

Question
I have a 1984 318i.  I have a complete cylinder head put on  the car about 3000 miles ago.  The distributor cap and parts are less than two years old.  The battery is two months old.  We replaced the battery because we had some trouble starting the car.

My son called and told me he was stopped at a stop sign and the car died.  The car has been running fine till then.  No problems.  He attempted to restart the car and had no luck.  He said it cranked over fine but would not fire.  The car is two hours away.  Is there something I can check before I tow it home.  A relay, fuse, fuel pump?

Answer
check for voltage at the coil "ignition on", if you have that then check for  spark "cranking".  If the engine is sparking then check the fuel pump (you should hear it buzzing under the car near the gas tank) if all is well then i would suspect a reference sensor (connected to the front of the engine on the harmonic balancer).  Check the vitals (fuel, air spark and timing) then attempt to figure out more specifically what the problem is.  It could be a fuse or relay (fuel pump; ECU).
