GMC Repair: shorting out, blowing fuse, gm engines, gmc sierra

Question
My truck is a 1997 GMC Sierra 1500 with a 350. It shut off on me the other day, with no response from the fuel pump, so my hubby replaced the fuel pump without thoroughly checking the fuses under the hood, when the new pump didn't work, he checked the fuses and found the ECM-1 fuse (20 amp) was blown, we replaced it and chalked it up to an expensive mistake. However, this morning, it blew again. I was told to check the wiring from the fuel pump to the distributor, but I can't really see much. I could find it if I knew "exactly" how to trace it. I have looked online for a wiring diagram, do you know where I can find one or do you have instructions on where to start and where to end? I am just not sure because I am not exactly sure which wires I am looking at. He also checked (before the fuel pump got replaced)to see if any voltage was getting to the fuel pump. It ranged anywhere to 3-4 volts, what is it supposed to read? Any help would be tremendous! Thanks alot!

Answer
I would check autozone's website. They do have alot of information there for DIY'ers. Another way, what I have done many times, is purchase a DIY repair manual. I would double check the wire to the pump. Look of the wiring harness from the distributors, triple check that. I currently build GM engines and we constantly have issues like this with wiring harnesses. Many of which are held with shrink hose. the fuel pump voltage sounds about right.
