GMC Repair: Transmission, orig miles, pan gasket

Question
1996 GMC Sierra SLE 2500 4x4 acquired 3 months ago, 85,000 orig miles; on regular acceleration from a stand still, the automatic transmission begins driving the vehicle forward and then about 2 seconds later kicks or surges (i'm not sure how to describe the effect), as if it has changed a gear. but from that point on it is a typical automatic transmission -- smooth. I find that kick annoying. is this typical or is there something wrong?

Answer
Given that this vehicle is a 3/4 ton 4WD, I would consider this normal. You could try using a thinner transmission fluid, have the valve body adjusted in the transmission, and definitely change the transmission filter and pan gasket. That is something I do every time I buy a used vehicle.
