GMC Repair: 2004 GMC Envoy XL, gmc envoy xl, chevy dealership

Question
QUESTION: Help...just moved across country and had my baby serviced at the GM dealer before I traveled over 1,000 miles.  I turned her on today (70 degrees here) (also she has close to 60,000 miles) and she made a screeching noise from the front towards engine area.  After driving for a few moments the engine light turned on and she almost stalled.  I hurried home and went to contact a dealer here in Myrtle Beach but they are closed until Monday, this is my only vehicle!!!

ANSWER: Hi
It REALLY sounds like the belt idler pulley MAY be your problem.
It is a fairly common failure.
It COULD also be a water pump, I have heard them make the same noise well similar noise.
I would attempt to find a shop opened Saturday and TRY to get it to them.... call other dealerships... ANY GM dealership will be able to work on your baby, it does not have to be a GMC brand only. Chevy dealership..etc...
Try a Nationwide repair chain....Firestone, Pepboys, Meineke, etc... most will be opened, and SHOULD have the capibilities to assist, if needed.
I REALLY hope this helps, and Good luck with her...

QUESTION: Thanks so much, I did check to see the one belt (the big one that I can see under/next to the Vortex engine area) it looks new but I know nothing about belts and where they are...under the hood looks great but as soon as she is started it has that annoying noise!  Is it okay to drive to the service place, I do not want to damage her!!  Thanks again for your fast help!!!

Answer
Hi
I think you'll be OK to drive it to service place....say as long as you drive it less than 20 miles. You MAY be able to drive further, but not knowing EXACTLY what the problem is.... I'd hate to say drive it further.
Can you tell..is the noise seem to be eminating from the Drivers side of the engine area?? If so thats where the idler pulley is.
Good luck
