GMC Repair: 1988 safari heater whinning, gmc safari, safari van

Question
I have a 1988 gmc safari van 4.3 6 cyl. and I hear a whinning sound when driving and increases as I drive. My heater sometimes comes on about 1/2 hour after driving. I looked under the hood and I hear the sound coming from the clutch on the compressor , I think that's what it is. Sometimes the clutch will turn. What is wrong and how can I fix this?

Answer
If this noise is apparent when the A/C compressor is OFF it is most likely the COMPRESSOR CLUTCH BEARING that is going bad. If the noise is ONLY apparent when the A/C compressor is ON, This would most likely be an internal compressor fault.

HOWEVER, A belt can make strange noises. Spray the belt with some BELT DRESSING available from any auto parts store and see if the noise is gone.

let me know.
