Hello autohelp:
I own a 2000 pontiac sunfire gt with 2.4 litre
engine. Just wondering how often the clutch fluid
should be changed? One G.M. dealer told me every
2 years, another said it's not required.
It uses dexron 3 and has a fill tube with clutch
fluid written on the cap. I've looked everywhere
for a drain plug but all I can find is the level
check plug.
I have a feeling the dealer that told me to
change it every two years thinks the car uses
dot 3 fluid and the other knows it's dex.3
Dot 3 is probably used in the more common 2.2
liter engine. The second dealer felt that since
it's dex.3 (a lubricant) it does not need changing. Why then do we bother changing auto
trany fluid which is usually dex.3?
Thx. John

Answer -
Because hydraulic fluid does not incur the constant temperature changes as does transmission fluid and due to the numerous parts in a transmission and the fibre clutches that wear causing fluid contamination changing trans fluid is a necessity.
Thank you for your answer:Since I should change the fluid, why then is their
no drain plug.Haynes manual and alldata say to simply remove the plug and
refill.I have a level check plug. should I try using this as a drain?
Also since it is dexron3 and not dot3 should it be changed every 2 years?
Thx. John

Answer
NO, You do NOT use this as a drain as it is ONLY used to CHECK the fluid level.

I ac e-mail you the exact procedures of how to remove the bottom transmission pan and replace the transmission filetr and the peocedure for refilling the transmission with fjluid thru the TRANSMISSION FLUID "VENT CAP".
