My '83 Alfa Romeo Spider quit running.  Fuel pump was not getting power.  I changed the Fuel pump relay, it will start and run for a few seconds and stop.  I understand this model has a cold start mode, then switches over to run mode after the key is released.  It's as if the fuel pump does not get power after the key is released.  If I run a "hot" to the pump, the car will start and run fine.  Any idea what could cause this? Is there a sensor that could be bad? I already checked the inline fuse next to the fuel pump relay.

So, you found the fuse under the rear seat (panel).  Do you know about the impact switch in the engine compartment. Also, the air flow meter also has a switch incorporated for the relay on some models.

Answer
About the time of your model the location was changed.  Originally it was on the firewall and was a long grey tube.
It was moved to the vicinity of the passengers knee and is black and rectangular.  Push the button to reset it or bypass it if it has failed.
