American Motors: 1982 amc eagle fuel gauge, gas gauge, amc eagle

Question
QUESTION: kevin, there's a yellow box w/wires and the fuse box under the dash. is this where the wire goes or to the fuel gauge itself? if it's to the fuse box, what will the fuse slot say for the fuel gauge?

ANSWER: The wire from the fuel tank sender unit is not fused. It goes directly to the instrumant cluster. Do the other gauges work properly?

QUESTION: not sure, but we think the heat gauge isn't working either. We just got the car so we're still guessing what all is wrong. we used a circuit tester to check the wire from where we could reach under the dash to the tank and there was no power. the wire was fleshtone by the way.I can't see very well under the dash but there are alot of wires and i can't tell if one goes directly to the gauge. help me.

Answer
Disconnect the sending wire at the fuel tank and touch it to ground with the key on. The gas gauge should go to FULL, if it does, then the sending unit in the tank is bad. If it doesn't, replace the gas gauge and constant voltage regulator on the cluster circuit board.
