American Motors: 79 AMC 304 V8 Carb help, edelbrock carburetor, holley 4bbl

Question
I have a 79 amc 304 v8 bored .30 over out of a Javelin that I put into my Jeep scrambler. edelbrock performer intake, headman headers, DUI distributor, electic fans, and I have a 1406 edelbrock 600 cfm carb. My mechanical timing is set at 14deg. im currently in ported vaccum. I am running 101 jets for a primary and .98 in the secondaries with .075/,047 metering rods. I smell gas in the exhaust pretty bad but the jeep seems to be running fine. plugs look brown.

actual question: am I over advancing? am I over fueling? should I switch to manifold vaccum?

my old holley 4bbl had 65 jets in it and it rocked my socks off.

Answer
I have never used an Edelbrock carburetor so I am not familiar with it's idiosyncrasies. But basic carburetor is carburetor.
1) Is the float level too high?
2) I would go up on the primary metering rods (bigger) 2 steps and monitor your plugs.
3) Timing or vacuum advance shouldn't create that much of a gas smell out your tail pipe.
4) What's your fuel pressure?
Try this and let me know.
Good luck.
