American Motors: gas gauge and sending unit for 1980 cj7, gas gauge, tank unit

wires go to gas tank cut&to gauge were removed when I bought.Hooked up gauge not working.Reversed wires on gauge tank shows 1/2tank with wires to sender disconnected.Checked power to sender but it only pulsates.Please help

I do not have a wiring diagram for a CJ.
You could remove the tank unit, hook up the wire and move the float though it's arc; see what the gauge does.
When the wire to the sending unit is grounded and the key is on, the gauge should go to "FULL". If it doesn't, there is a problem in the gauge circuit. If the gauge does go to "FULL" when the wire is grounded, the sending unit is probably no good.
