American Motors: 73 Javelin, champion spark plugs, edelbrock manifold

QUESTION: I just read your answer on 304 carb conversion from 2bbl to 4bbl and I like it!!!  Does my 73 Javelin 304 auto have EGR and will the Edelbrock performer fit either way?  Also, they have a model 2131 and 3731, which do you recommend?

ANSWER: If you have the original engine in your Javelin, you have an EGR valve. It is against the law in most states to modify the emission controls, which includes removal of the EGR valve. There might be exemptions on older vehicles.
You will have to decide which Edelbrock manifold to use. I used the 2131 on 3 different engines. It's good for low to mid-range performance.
Be sure to use the proper carburetor, camshaft & exhaust setup along with the Edelbrock.

QUESTION: I definitely want your advice on the best combination.  I was hoping to not alter the engine internally just yet.  Probably will in the future and not looking to race, just wanting to improve the performance.  I was hoping to do the intake, carb, headers and exhaust.  If I use the Edelbrock 2131 which other components do you recommend without breaking the bank?

ANSWER: 1) Holley 600 or Edebrock 650 carburetor with VACUUM secondaries.
2) A set of QUALITY headers, 1 5/8" - 1 3/4" diameter.
  Even the shorty headers would be OK
3) Dual exhaust with minimum 2 1/2" diameter tubing
4) Flowmaster mufflers.
5) A good tune up with Echlin or Accel points, Champion Spark Plugs. Make sure your cap, rotor & wires are in good condition.
6) MSD ignition and a good ignition coil, if possible.
By the way, what is the internal condition of your engine? Have you performed a compression test? If your engine isn't in good shape internally, don't waste the money adding the items above.
