American Motors: addendum to cam gear question, jeep 258, cam gear

Question
Original question-Should the timing marks be aligned side by side on inside or on the outside of cam gear?"

The motor is a AMC Jeep 258

Answer
Brad,
On a 258, the timing marks on the cam gear are facing the  outside of the gear, at least on OEM gears. Aftermarket gears might have them near a tooth. The cam and crank gears should be facing each other. If you were looking at the the front of the engine, the crank gear mark should be at 10:30 and the cam gear mark should be at 4:30....facing each other. Another way of checking it after installation is to position the cam gear mark at the 1:00 position. You should be able to count 15 pins to the crank gear mark. Hope this helps.
