American Motors: stalling...and thumping sound in reverse, transfer case, thump

I have an 1988(1987 built) Wagle wagon, replaced carb,plugs wires,coil ect. car will sometimes stall when starting off from a stop. but runs well once you get it going??? also when backing out of my driveway or just going in reverse I hear a thumping sound??? trans seems to shift fine. please help. Thanks L.A.

The stalling may be that the fast idle speed is not set to specs OR the choke pull-off is set to open to much.

The thump you hear is most likely the transfer case hitting the guard panel under the transfer case due to a faulty trans mount.

At least that is what the 4 eagles that i had used to do.
