American Motors: 84 CJ7 258-6 Starting Problem, engine ignition, key switch

Question
When I turn the key to "start" the engine turns over and runs untill I place the key to "Run" and
the engine shuts down. It does this every time I try to start the Jeep. What is the potential culprits and what is the test procedure?

Answer
I don't have much experience on the newer AMC/Jeeps with an ECU.
However, I would recommend checking the following:
1) Ignition switch located on the steering column. It is the switch that the key actually moves to crank the engine. The key switch has a rod that moves the switch. I have seen them out of adjustment or bad.
2) Engine ignition module. Especially the Motorcraft unit.
3) Check for voltage at the (+) side of the coil during cranking and when running. USe a voltmeter, not a test light. It should be around 12V when cranking, around 9V running.
4) Use a voltmeter to monitor the (-) side of the coil. It should pulse during cranking, probably constant when running.
Let me know what you find.
